FANFIC: (THE TRIBE) Five men Brady wished would be her dad

TITLE: Five men Brady wished would be her dad
CHARACTERS: Brady, Trudy, Jack, Bray, Jay, Hawk, Zoot/Martin
PAIRING: Trudy/Jack
RATING/WARNINGS: G

1. As a little baby girl she felt so at home in uncle Bray’s arms.
His scent, his comforting voice, and how he’d sometimes sing softly to her when no one else was around, when she woke up crying in the night and her mother was too exhausted to do anything.

As a teenage girl she doesn’t remember him. All she knows is what she’s been told about him, all she has is a faded picture of him with her dad, his brother, both smiling.

But every time she thinks about him she feels a longing, a feeling that he was someone special to her, and she wishes she had more than other’s memories of him.

2. She doesn’t remember much from when her mother and Jay were together, she has vague memories of him reading to her from a book once.

Most of all she remembers him with Bray. How he’d play with him, feed him, tease him, and hold him when he cried. To Bray he has always been dad, and Jay has always loved him like a son.

Brady always feels a sting of jealousy when she sees how close they are, and can’t help but wonder sometimes, why not her?

3. Her mother took her to see the Eco’s as often as possible, and Brady always learned more there than she did at the mall. Hawk did his best to teach her everything an Eco needs to know to survive in the nature, without hurting it.

As a little girl she once tried to play matchmaker with Hawk and her mother. It didn’t work at all, and she admitted to it when confronted.

Hawk looked shocked when she said she wanted him to be her dad, and then he smiled and patted her gently on the head.

“I love you, sweetie, but I wouldn’t be much of a dad.”

She had never forgiven herself for telling him, as things had never been the same, even if she always knew he loved her. After they had to move camp further away years ago, she barely saw him or the rest of the Eco’s.

4. Jack has always been there, as long as she can remember. He fixed her toys when she was little, and was forever her hero after stopping her tears over and over again.

A few times when she was younger he and Ellie babysat her, and she always loved his weirdness and insecurity with her.

As she got older she’d spend time with him in the workshop, learning about scientific things, and mostly trying not to mess up anything for him.

After Ellie left him, it seemed natural that it was her mother who was there for him. She’d make him dinner, and the three of them would spend the day together. Jack became a bigger and bigger part of their lives, until he and her mother could no longer deny there was more than friendship.

Brady had never been as happy as the day they told her she was getting a little brother or sister.

Jack loved her as much as he loved his own children, she had never doubted that. She was his little girl, always.

5. No matter how much she loves her family now, there are times she misses her real dad. She doesn’t know how she can miss someone she never knew, but she does.

No one but Lex was ever willing to talk about him much, and Lex stopped telling her horror stories after she started crying one time. Her mother has told her some of what he was like before he changed, but she won’t talk about after.

Brady wishes her mother would tell her, because the smiling boy in the picture with uncle Bray is not the monster Lex told her about.

She wants, no she needs to know how he could change so much. Maybe then she can stop the nagging voice in the back of her head that tells her she could end up the same way.

FANFICTION: (THE TRIBE) Consequences (Jack/Trudy)

TITLE: Consequences
CHARACTERS: Trudy, Jack, Brady, Ellie, Amber, May, Salene
PAIRING(S): Trudy/Jack, Jack/Ellie, tiny hint of Jay/Amber
RATING/WARNINGS: G... no warnings. Other than kissing.
SUMMARY: The truth comes out, and Jack and Trudy have to face the consequences.
NOTES: Something doesn't feel completely right about this, but I can't figure out what's bugging me... maybe some of you guys can help me?

Trudy couldn’t understand how no one knew. For the third time in just a few minutes their eyes met. They smiled carefully to each other, before quickly turning away again.
She felt it was so obvious, that everyone could tell just by looking at her. How could they not notice? How could Ellie not notice, sitting right next to him all the three times?

A part of her wished Ellie would figure it out by herself, before they told her.

No one had noticed when it first started either, when they were embarrassed and awkward around each other, and full of shame because of Ellie.
The shame was still there, Trudy had a feeling that would never go away. She was having a… a something, with a friend’s boyfriend, behind her back. She couldn’t get herself to call it an affair, they had never slept together.

They had tried to keep away from each other, but as Brady had taken a liking to Jack, it was difficult. And they didn’t want to stay away from each other.

They tried being just friends again, but it turned out to be impossible.

She looked up, and for the fourth time their eyes met. This time they didn’t look away as fast.

“Jack, are you listening to me?” Ellie put her hand on his arm, and he looked at her instead.
Ellie looked over towards Trudy, and smiled to her little girl.

“What is Brady doing that is so much more interesting?”

She had no idea.

Jack didn’t get to answer before Amber came into the café, Bray in one arm and holding a CD in the other.

“What’s that?” Salene looked up from another table. Next to her May seemed annoyed that their conversation had been interrupted.

“I don’t know. Mega gave it to me, said it was something we should see,” Amber sighed, and walked over to the computer.

The others walked over to join her. As Ellie left their table, Jack looked at Trudy for a second before he followed. Trudy let Brady sit and play with her food before she was the last to join over by the computer.

A shot of Jack’s workshop came up. Trudy gasped when she saw herself hugging Jack, knowing exactly what day this was. It was the day she had gone to the workshop to ask Jack if he could fix one of Brady’s toys. The subject had gotten to Dal somehow; she had probably brought it up herself. She had started saying she was sorry for everything that happened with the Chosen. It was when he said he had forgiven her a long time ago, that she threw her arms around him.

In the corner of her eye she saw Jack standing stiff next to Ellie, who looked puzzled at the screen.

“Didn’t we remove all the cameras in the workshop?” she asked warily.

“Must have missed one,” May replied.

No one had looked away from the screen, where Trudy moved to end the hug. They both stopped, their arms still around each other. For a second they looked into each other’s eyes, before their lips met. It was their first kiss.

“It’s a manipulation,” Amber said quickly, breaking the tense silence. “Like Ram did with me and Jay, to fool Ebony”

Ellie let out a relieved sigh, as did the others.

“What is he trying to do?” Ellie angrily turned to Jack.

He finally removed his eyes from the screen, but he didn’t look her in the eyes. Ellie looked at him, before turning to Trudy.

Trudy knew she had the same look on her face, a look of guilt. The anger on Ellie’s face turned to despair. The others were catching on now to, all of them looking shocked from Jack to Trudy.

“It’s real…” Ellie said, no louder then a whisper. She turned back to Jack, who looked at her this time.

“I’m sorry…” his voice was shaking. Ellie said nothing, she just ran.
Salene sent Trudy an angry look as she hurried past her to catch up with Ellie.

She wasn’t supposed to find out like that.

It was only a few days ago they had decided to tell her, but there was the matter of finding the right way. Jack was going to do it, it was better coming from him. If she went with him, it would only make things worse. Trudy would have to deal with Ellie soon enough any way.

She was supposed to be her friend.

“What is this?” Amber stood up, balancing her son on her hip. “Please tell me it only happened once, and it was all a mistake.”

Neither of them answered, they just glanced quickly at each other.

“I don’t believe this…” Amber shook her head. “She’s your friend, Trudy!”

“I don’t think you’re the right person to lecture me!” Trudy shot back angrily as Amber walked past them.

“Oh, so because I hurt you it gives you the right to hurt Ellie?” Amber turned back towards her.

“That is not what I said!” Trudy was furious. She knew what she had done was wrong, but Amber of all people should understand.

She forced herself to calm down when she saw the look on Brady’s face. Letting the argument drop, she smiled to her daughter to make her think everything was ok.

“This is going to tear the tribe apart, do you realise that?” Amber lowered her voice, but the anger was still obvious in her voice.

“Tell Ellie it was a mistake,” she turned to Jack. “You do still love her, don’t you?”

Jack glanced nervously at Trudy, who tried to give him a supportive smile. “I do,” he sighed. “But it’s not that easy,”

“Oh, it’s very easy, Jack!” Amber raised her voice again.

“Really? Like with you and Jay?” Trudy was in tears now, everything was going so wrong. “You tried to stay away, tried to be just friends, tried not to break my heart! But it still happened. Tell me, what was so easy about it?”

“Trudy does have a point, Amber.”

Trudy turned to look at May, so did Jack and Amber.

May shrugged. “I’m just saying…”

Amber looked torn between anger and acceptance, but then she sighed. “I know.”

Trudy was surprised, she had expected a long speech about right and wrong, and the good of the tribe, but instead Amber gave her a hug.

“You should go talk to her,” Amber turned to Jack.

He took a deep breath, and nodded. Trudy took his hand, and squeezed it carefully. Their eyes met, and Trudy tried to give him an encouraging smile, but came closer to crying. He tried to walk away, but she held him back.

“Whatever happens, just remember that I love you,” she said in a low voice. He gave a slight nod, and a small smile, before she let go, and he walked out of the café.

Trudy sat down next to her daughter, too lost in her thoughts to notice the mess Brady had made.

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” Brady looked at her with worried eyes.

“I just have to face the consequences…” Trudy couldn’t help smile at the confused look on Brady’s face.

“Consequences means that sometimes the things you do can hurt other people. Even if you really want something, and even if it’s right for you, sometimes it will hurt others if you get it.”

Brady nodded seriously, looking like she was really thinking about what she had just learned.

“I don’t like consequences!” she said finally, after thinking for a few seconds.

Trudy wholeheartedly agreed.

FANFIC: (THE TRIBE): Make the best of a bad situation (May/Trudy)

TITLE: Make the best of a bad situation
CHARACTERS: May, Trudy, Brady, Salene, mentions of others.
PAIRING: May/Trudy, mentions of May/Salene, Jay/Trudy and Jay/Amber.
RATING/WARNINGS: PG/PG-13. Femslash.
SUMMARY/NOTES: Two heartbroken girls meet on the roof late at night, while the others celebrate the victory over the Techno's.

Everyone seemed to be happy, celebrating the final victory of the Techno’s.
Trudy had been in a good mood up until she saw Amber and Jay dancing close together, not following the fast rhythm at all.

Sighing heavily she leaned back against the wall. Since Ruby had offered to be with the kids, she felt like she couldn’t just go back to her room yet. What was she supposed to do there anyway? Read one of the books she had read a few hundred times already?
Instead she decided to take a break. She filled up her glass, and sneaked out of the room. No one seemed to notice if she was there or not.

Up on the roof she let out a relieved sigh. It was so quiet, the whole city was peaceful, just like they had fought for.
At that moment it wasn’t enough to make her feel happy. Who did she have to celebrate it with? Brady didn’t understand what had happened.

“Here’s to winning the war, defeating Mega, and getting peace back,” she held up her glass to no one, and then drank half of it at once.

“However long it lasts before the next crazy comes along…” she sighed and stepped closer to the edge.

“Hey Trudy!”

She let out a small scream, and turned around.

“May! Don’t sneak up on people when they’re standing on the edge of the roof!”

“Sorry…” May laughed.
Trudy couldn’t help smiling with her.

“Not in a party mood?” May’s eyes searched her face.
Trudy looked out over the city to avoid her gaze.

“No, guess not…” she glanced back at May who had finally stopped looking at her. “What about you?”

May held up a bottle. “I felt like getting a little drunk, but couldn’t do it around Salene, so I figured this was the best place…”

Trudy understood, and smiled to her. “You’re a good friend.”

May flinched a little at that. “I have a lot to make up for…” she mumbled.

“Guess that’s something we have in common…” Trudy sighed.

An uncomfortable silence fell over them, and they just stood there staring out at the city for a while.

“No, it’s not.” May said suddenly.

Trudy looked confused at her, trying to remember what they had been talking about.

“You had a kid, and you were brainwashed. I just looked after myself, like I always do… with the Chosen, and with Mega,” her eyes were still looking at the same spot in the sky.

Trudy tried to find the right words to say, but couldn’t think of anything.

“We made our choices, and have to face the consequences,” she said finally.
May just nodded in response.

“Simple as that!” Trudy raised her glass.

“Real simple,” May said with a laugh.

“Here’s to consequences, simplicity, and uh…” Trudy stopped.

“Forgiveness? Redemption?” May suggested, raising her glass to.

“Both of those!” Trudy waved her glass so much that she spilled some of her drink. “Oops…” she giggled. “Won’t get drink, I mean drunk, if I throw it all out.”

“I think you’re drunk enough,” May couldn’t hide her amusement.

Trudy started laughing, and leaned on May. “Not used to alcolol…”

May smiled as she put one arm around her to keep her on her feet.

“You mean alcohol?”

That sent Trudy into another laughing fit.

“You should go to bed, Trudy. Sleep it off…” May suggested, but Trudy just shook her head. “Ok, but at least go back inside?” May sighed. “Don’t think the roof is the safest place for you to be right now…”

“I need air!” Trudy insisted, but let May lead her away from the edge.
They sat down next to each other, leaning against the wall.

Trudy again raised her glass.
“Here’s to never falling for someone who doesn’t feel the same way ever again!”

“I’ll drink to that!” May sighed.

During the next hour they had raised their glass to everything from Brady to pepperoni pizza, and the bottle was getting empty.

Trudy couldn’t remember much the next morning when she woke up. To her surprise someone’s arm was around her, and an even bigger surprise was in store when she turned around to see a sleeping May.
It didn’t take more than a second for Trudy to realise they were both naked. She remembered flashes of hands on skin, lips on skin, lips on lips…

She quickly disentangled herself from May, and pulled her sheets up over her chest. When May started stirring, Trudy quickly got out of the bed, and put on her bathrobe.

“Where am I?” May sat up, looking confused.

Trudy looked away when the sheets slid down. May had covered herself when she dared do look back, and looked as embarrassed as Trudy felt.

“Ruby will probably be here with Brady soon,” Trudy said slowly.
May took the hint, and nodded. Trudy turned around to let her get dressed.

She found herself sneaking a glance in the mirror, suddenly remembering the passionate kisses; tongues meeting, teeth clashing. Desperate and clumsy attempts of taking each other’s clothes off, hands going in very new places, May trailing kisses down her stomach…

Trudy shook her head, trying to stop the images. Suddenly her eyes met May’s in the mirror, and she looked away, embarrassed to have been caught looking.

“I’m dressed now,” May said finally, and Trudy turned back around.

She pulled the bathrobe tighter around herself, like it would somehow protect her from the pieces of memories that kept going through her head.

“I won’t mention it to anyone if you don’t want me to.” May looked at her.

“Thanks,” Trudy smiled carefully.

For a second May looked disappointed, like she was hoping for something else. But then she left, and Trudy decided to stop thinking about it, pretend it never happened.

Trudy could swear May was making it difficult on purpose.
Whenever their eyes met across the room, she’d hold her gaze, and Trudy could swear she saw a smile whenever she turned away blushing.
May also seemed to take every opportunity to touch her, and to get close enough for them to brush against each other. It was driving Trudy crazy.

But the only one who seemed to notice anything different, was Brady. Whenever her mother got that distant look on her face, she had to yell or shake her to get a response.

It was during those days that Trudy realised what must have happened between May and Salene. The tension, the love-letter Gel found, Salene avoiding any questions about what was wrong. It all made sense now. Even if they were friends again, Trudy could tell it wasn’t the same as it had been.

And suddenly she found herself watching the two with a nagging feeling in her stomach.
This wasn’t fair. The two of them had both been heartbroken that night on the roof, Trudy realised that now, and somehow she was falling for May. Another person who’s heart belonged to someone else.

As much as Trudy tried to avoid it, it only took about a week before she ended up alone with May.
She went to get herself some water, after waking up from a pleasant yet disturbing dream, when May was already sitting in the café. With the dream fresh in mind, May was the last person Trudy wanted to see.

“Can’t sleep?” May looked at her.

Trudy shook her head slightly, and walked into the kitchen. She found a water bottle, and dropped it in surprise when May was suddenly next to her.

“Didn’t mean to scare you,” May picked it up, and put it on the counter, taking the chance to stand even closer.

“Are you going to avoid me forever?” She asked suddenly.

“I’m not avoiding you,” Trudy mumbled, trying to get past her, but May stepped in front of her again.
Instead of getting away, she was now even closer to her. May cupped her face, forcing her to look at her.

“What are you afraid of?” she asked, her voice barely louder then a whisper.

A broken heart, that was what she was afraid of. They were both self-destructive, and both hung up on someone else. But when May’s lips were suddenly on hers, she let all those thoughts disappear. Maybe they could make each other happy, even if just for a little while.

FANFIC: (THE TRIBE) Still here (Ryan, Patsy)

TITLE: Still here
CHARACTERS: Ryan, Patsy, Moon, and Pony-Joe.
PAIRING: None really. Mentions of past Ryan/Salene.
RATING/WARNINGS: PG/Character death.
SUMMARY/NOTES: Sort of a missing scene fic, about what happened to Ryan and Patsy, and how Ryan met the horse-traders. I feel really mean for writing this, but the idea got stuck in my head, and I couldn't get it out.

This was the hardest thing he had ever had to face. There was nothing that could ever have prepared him for something as painful as this.
Ryan knew she wouldn’t make it, his little girl would be gone in just days. He smiled to himself, knowing that if he had called her that out loud she would object.

Patsy was no little girl, she was grown up. But looking down at her, hidden under blankets and leaves, she looked even younger then when he first met her. Only her face was visible, he had covered her up so she wouldn’t be cold. She always complained about being cold when she was awake, even though she had a high fever.

Patsy whimpered in her sleep, like she always did. He didn’t know what nightmares were haunting her, but the look on her face always told him he didn’t want to know. Gently he started stroking her hair, until she opened her eyes, and gave him a smile.

“You’re still here,” her voice was barely louder then a whisper, and he had to lean down to hear.

“I’m not leaving you. I promised you that when we found each other in the camp, remember? I’ll always be here,” he said, as he helped her sit up. He handed over the water bottle, but she barely drank any of it.

“You have to keep strong, Patsy. Drink up,” he tried to be encouraging, but she shook her head.
When she looked at him he could see tears in her eyes.

“I don’t want to die!” She started to sob, and he put his arm around her.

“You won’t, I’m not going to let you die, Pats.” he couldn’t decide if the sound she made was a sob or a laugh.

“There’s nothing you can do about it, Ryan.”

She looked up at him, and smiled sadly.
“I promised myself that as soon as I got out, I would look for Cloe. And for Paul,” Patsy’s voice was suddenly stronger.

“Remember that guy we met in the camp? He knew Paul; it had to have been Paul, right?” Her voice cracked, and she looked up at Ryan again.

“Yeah, I think so. Deaf kid, around the time he disappeared… The way he described him, it sure sounded like Paul,” Ryan had to smile. He remembered how Patsy’s face lit up when she realised her brother was ok.

“And Cloe… I wanted so badly to find her, and make sure everything was ok. But I’m never going to see her again,” she started sobbing again.
“Don’t say that. She’s out there, we’ll find her. As soon as we get you better, we’ll find them both. And then we’ll go home to the mall, to see Salene again,” he promised Patsy that, even though he didn’t want to see Salene again.

He knew she had lost the baby, one of the guards delivered a message from Lieutenant Luke. The guard who told him seemed genuinely upset, and Ryan had learned that some of the Chosen actually did want to make the world a better place, they just got caught up with the wrong people. Some were the complete opposite; the girl in his arms was proof of that. Scars, infected wounds, dehydration, exhaustion… She was a traitor, and had been treated ten times worse then any other prisoner, and slowly they were killing her. Ryan only hoped Cloe had been luckier with her punishment.

He managed to force Patsy to eat something, before she fell asleep again. He looked towards the mountains in the distance, the view of the sunset obscured by the tears in his eyes. He only let himself cry when Patsy was asleep; he couldn’t let her see how scared he was.

He had done everything he could. He kept her warm, made sure she was in the sun during the day, and held her in his arms at night to share his body heat. He barely ate anything from the little they had of food and gave it all to her, even though she threw up most of it. He cleaned her wounds the best he could, with water from the river nearby. But none of it was enough. She only got worse every day, and he had to face up to the fact that she was going to die.

That didn’t mean he had to let her know though. She was going to die knowing that he never gave up on her, no matter what.

A few mornings later, Ryan woke up to a beautiful day. There was not a cloud in sight, and the sun was shining brightly, reflecting on the river floating peacefully along nearby.

Ryan had no time to enjoy this though, when he noticed how cold Patsy was. She had been clinging to his arm, but he easily freed himself from her. He shook her carefully, calling out her name. The pained expression on her face stayed the same. He started sobbing, still calling out her name.

It took hours before he calmed down. He walked down to the river, cooling his face down in the water. He found a thick branch, and started digging a hole underneath the three by the riverside. Patsy had said it was beautiful there when they first found this place.

After putting her in the ground, he carved out her name on the tree with a sharp rock. He wanted to add something more, something meaningful, or something she would appreciate. He couldn’t find the right words, and decided on just picking some flowers instead.
He couldn’t bring himself to hold a speech either. He felt she deserved one, but there was nothing he could say. So he left it at that, and got a few hours sleep before he moved on.

He walked for days, knowing he was getting close to the city. He had no wish to go there really; he wasn’t ready for that yet. But where else could he go?

It was on the fifth day he ran into the horse traders. He had run out of food on the second day, and was starving. In exchange for helping them out with one of their carriages, they gave him something to eat.
Pony-Joe offered to let him join, since he seemed like a good worker. Ryan really did consider it, until he ended up talking to Moon later that night.

“Where were you headed when we found you?” She asked curiously.

“To the city I guess,” he sighed, fixing his eyes on the fire.

“Is there anyone waiting for you there?”

He looked at her, unsure of what to answer. Would Salene be waiting for him? He doubted it, she hadn’t loved him the way he loved her. And without the baby, she would have no commitment to wait for him.
Lex? They had been through a lot together, but he didn’t think Lex would really miss him if he never came back.
Maybe the others would think about him fondly now and then, remembering the dumb and faithful Ryan who had once been in their tribe, but they wouldn’t really miss him. The only ones worth going back for would be Cloe and Patsy. Now Patsy was dead, and Cloe was out there somewhere.

“No,” he finally replied. “I think they’ll be just fine without me.”

“Then why do you need to think about coming with us?” Moon smiled. “It’s not what I dreamt of, but it’s good enough for now,” she didn’t seem too convinced herself of that.

“Do you have bigger dreams?”

“I used to,” Ryan shrugged. “But too much has happened since that. Guess I see the world differently now,” he sighed.

Moon put a comforting hand on his arm, and opened her mouth to say something. She was interrupted by Pony-Joe calling for her. She sighed and gave Ryan a stiff smile, before walking over to him.

Ryan was gone the next morning. Moon woke up to find a note left in her tent.

Don’t give up on your dreams.

Moon’s talk about dreams had made him realise what he needed to do. He didn’t have any dreams of his own left, but Patsy had dreams. He was going to find Cloe and Paul, and make sure they were ok. Then he could bring them back to the mall for a memorial for Patsy, with all the people she loved there.

He could see the city in the distance, and he smiled to himself. One day he’d be back there again.
